I started DJ’ing when I was 16. I was tired of the local youth club disco I used to go to every week and along with my best friend Dave Butler built The Cuddly Toy Experience which was our first mobile disco. We became popular on the local circuit and it was not long before I moved away from being a mobile DJ and got a little more serious with my first Social Club residency. After a disastrous stint in that field I progressed to working at Fun Pubs in Liverpool. I got a job at the infamous Bonkers and then started working at clubs. Throughout this whole process, I was always into music. House music did not even exist then but great club music did and I loved it all. Stu Allen introduced me to house music. He played a mix from the Master Jam Md’s which included Washing Machine by Mr Fingers (Robert Owens). I was hooked. I used to have to drive to London to buy records then, which was a 500 mile round trip, but it was worth it. The biggest problem for me at that time was the music I loved was really an underground sound and I played in commercial clubs. It was time for another change. That change came after I got fired from Mr Smiths in Warrington for continuing to play too much house music despite being warned not to! I had a Friday night off and decided I should check out a night in Longton Stoke On Trent at a club called Shelleys. It was home of a new DJ called Sasha. That night changed my life. I never went back to being a commercial DJ again. 6 weeks later I was playing at Shelleys and on the road that I wanted to be on.
I moved to America in 1998. I just could not stay in England anymore as I was making the cross Atlantic trip way too much and I just loved the scene in the US. I was lucky enough to travel the length and breadth of the US, meet some amazing people, play some of the best gigs of my life, meet my wife, have a child, settle down and move into a different phase of my life. After being Music Director for Avalon in Boston for 5 years I am now focused on my own project titled KingSize Boston. KingSize Boston has established itself in the last 12 months as the marquee electronic music night in the city and we have been very proud to present some amazing shows at Roxy and Underbar. You can learn more about KingSize Boston here www.kingsizeboston.com
Even in these times of economic uncertainty great music is being produced and played to people all over the world. I always feel its part of my job to make sure that people hear as much great music a possible as music’s power to make a bad day feel good is second to none.
Time waits for no man least of all me. The story continues.
